BLAIR ATHOLL GOLF COURSE AND CLUB: A BRIEF HISTORY

The course, initially called Invertilt Golf Course, opened on 1st July, 1896 and was officially opened on Thursday 20th August that year by a match between visitors and members of the club. The course started out as nine holes but for a brief period was extended to eighteen holes. The present nine holes was established in 1920.

A wooden shack near today’s fourth hole was the original club house and this, for a lengthy period became the greenkeepers shed. The present day club house had its opening ceremony on 7th June, 1905 with extensions undertaken in 1979 and another in 1996. On Saturday 22nd January, 1898, Tom Morris, “The Grand Old Man of Golf” paid a visit and on 2nd August, 1923 the great James Braid played on the course.

To mark the 125th Anniversary a small booklet outlining a detailed history of the golf course and club was produced and is available to visitors who wish a memento of their game at a cost of £5.00.
