The course

The course is a classic James Braid design, using natural contours to best effect, and has been augmented recently with the addition of several ponds crafted in local stonework. It is generally easy-walking parkland with short climbs to and from a plateau, which is a prominent feature affording fine views from the clubhouse and elevated tee and green positions for several of the holes. Golfers particularly appreciate the variety of the course. The par 3s range from a wedge shot between towering Scots pines onto (hopefully) a tightly guarded green in the valley below, to a full drive along the edge of the River Garry (undoubtedly one of Scotland’s most challenging holes from the back tees).

There is a good mix of open driving holes and shorter par 4s, over which accuracy is at a premium but brave shots can be well rewarded. The final par 5 winds up to the clubhouse with an approach played between sentinel pines to the home green. The Blair Atholl course presents a beautifully balanced challenge to the golfer, allowing good scoring for the patient, precise player.
